RECOMMENDATION

In the light of General Comment No. 2 (2002) on the role of independent human rights institutions, the Committee urges the State party to immediately cease all actions of reprisals against the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives for its co-operation with United Nations bodies and ensure the independence of this monitoring mechanism, including with regards to its funding, mandate and immunities, so as to ensure full compliance with the Paris Principles. In respect to the latter, the Committee recommends that the State party seek technical cooperation from, among others, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), UNICEF and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
